Action continues at the Regional basketball tournaments across Arkansas, and a number of teams have punched their tickets to the State Tourney. On the other hand, a number of local teams have also seen their seasons draw to a close in first round play.
In the 3A-3 Regional at Manila High School this week--the Corning Lady Bobcats advanced to the State Tournament for the first time in decades with a 57-50 overtime win over Flippin. They're set to face Cave City at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday, Feb. 26) in the semi's. Also Wednesday, Valley Springs beat Rivercrest's girls 60-39. In the boy's bracket it was Earle over Mt. View 67-39 as the Bulldogs advance to the big show, while the Harrisburg Hornets finally ran out of steam as they fell to Valley Springs 29-61. Thursday night in the girl's bracket--Mt. View eliminated the Lady Bulldogs of Earle 59-34, and Cave City beat the Manila girl's squad 68-46 ending their season. In the boy's bracket the host Manila Lions advanced with a decisive 67-36 win over Yellville-Summitt, and the Rivercrest Colts eliminated the Cave City Cavemen 79-71. Friday's game at Manila will include Valley Springs and Mt. View in the girl's bracket at 4 p.m. followed at 5:30 by Valley Springs and Manila in the boy's bracket. The 7 p.m. ballgame will be a good one, as Corning and Cave City's girls square-off. That will be followed at 8:30 p.m. by the Earle-Rivercrest showdown in the boy's bracket as the two conference foes meet. Saturday at noon the losers in the two girl's games will play, followed by the boy's consolation game around 1:30. The girl's winners will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday evening, followed at 7:30 by the boy's Regional championship game. Meanwhile, at the Class 2A North Regional at Midland High School, the three local teams in contention were all eliminated in the first round. Wednesday the Rector boys fell to Melbourne 41-64 in the first round, while the Lady Greyhounds of Marmaduke dropped a 35-38 decision to Cotter. And on Thursday afternoon the Marmaduke boys were eliminated by the host team from Midland 54-65. In that Regional the EPC and BIC girls, and the EPC boys remain in the hunt. |
