It's a time of great change for the Piggott Mohawk sports teams. Now that baseball season is complete the Tribe has been conducting spring football workouts and have just completed their five days of full pads. The team will return to the practice field Monday and Tuesday for shorts-helmet and shoulder pad workouts as they wrap up their spring effort.

Congrats to Coach Michael Harrell and the junior boy's track team (read that off-season football) as they took the district tournament with a ten point win over Corning at Jonesboro High. We'll have all the details in the May 14 edition of The Times. Harrell was quick to point out that the win came 20 years to the week after the junior Mohawk track team won the district crown in 1988. Michael was quick to point that out because he was a member of that championship team.

The all-sports assembly was held last week and we'll have details in coming editions. We can report that the football team handed out the coveted Mr. Mohawk award to Brice Swann. Other honors and details will follow.

Speaking of football the schedules are now out..the junior boys open their season Sept 11 at Corning and the senior boys will host Valley View on Sept 5. The district re-alignment and more aggressive schedule should be interesting. The line-up for opponents is; Valley View, Caruthersville, Clarendon, Cave City, Earle, Harrisburg, Hoxie, Rivercrest, Manila and we end the season on Thur, Nov 6 at Corning. Of the opponents the Mohawks will face this year seven of then made the playoffs last year. By the way, Homecoming will be Oct. 3 against the Earle Bulldogs (a final four team last year in 2A). Go Tribe!

I haven't talked to him, but reports are that Paul Seegraves has stepped down as boy's basketball coach for PHS but will remain as a teacher and continue with his outstanding tennis program. The school board is scheduled to discuss hiring a coach at their meeting Monday night, but no indication yet on who the top candidates might be.

Paul stepped into a difficult situtation following Matt Sutfin's stroke and did a good job, he loves Mohawk sports and has been a great asset to the district in my mind. I'm glad he'll still be around, but agree that it was probably time for a change.

Your feedback and comments are welcome on this site as long as we all play fair. It should be a great place for folks who love Piggott sports to look for info...but we want to do it in a positive manner. High school sports is important to a lot of folks, me included, let's have a good time with this site.

Paul is a fantastic man and a great teacher. I have nothing but respect for him. It's just a shame he wasn't made Athletic Director. That is the real injustice.
