Yeah, it's September
Posted Wednesday, September 1, at 10:38 AM
I really didn't have a good title, so a minor outburst on the arrival of the month of September will have to suffice.

I've been a little under the weather the past several days, which means I haven't felt like enjoying the cooler weather--but I have spent a lot of time in front of the TV.

Well, the Redbirds continue to self-destruct and that weekend series with the Nationals was a tough one. We went to the lake, so I listened to the games Friday and Saturday night on the radio. Yikes! The pitching is falling apart, and the bats are cooling down--I wonder if they read my piece about Tony LaRussa? Actually, I heard the most recent rumor mill has the Yankee's Joe Girardi taking the Cubbies job. At this point it's not really a big deal, but it gives us something to jaw about.

I did drag myself out to the community pep rally Monday night, and enjoyed fine-tuning my camera for football season while watching the ladies in the powder puff game. I don't know how it looked from the stands, but those young ladies were pretty physical for a flag football game. Congrats to the winning team and coach Billy Joe Seal, and to the challengers and coach Kyle Phillips. A story and photos of the teams may be found elsewhere on this website.

The Lady Mohawks opened their conference season Tuesday night and lost in straight games to CRA at Piggott High School. The girls will be improving as the season goes on, but they sure could use all the fan support we can muster in the meantime. They'll be back in the friendly confines of the PHS gym tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 2) as they host Walnut Ridge. The junior B game will start around 4:30 p.m. with the senior B, junior A and senior A games to follow. Go Tribe!

Speaking of the community pep rally, if you wondered where the Mohawk tennis team was--and why they were not recognized--they were in Jonesboro taking on Earle in a conference match. Monday afternoon the teams split with Trumann as the girls got their first win and the boys fell to 0-2.

The Mohawks only have two more home sets scheduled, with the next one coming up Monday, Sept. 13.

A great time of year
Posted Thursday, August 12, at 11:24 AM

August is a great time of year for sports fans, as the baseball season begins to move into pennant races, football is gearing-up and that means basektball won't be too far behind. In years past I probably would have commented on the NASCAR season too, but lately I've grown away from the sport I used to call my favorite...

Hooten's picks Tribe sixth in 3A-3
Posted Wednesday, July 21, at 12:57 PM

The new Hooten's Arkansas Football Guide is now on sale, and the 18th edition of the pre-season preview has picked the Piggott Mohawks to finish sixth in the tough 3A-3 conference. Coming off a disappointing 3-7 campaign, in which the Tribe went 2-5 in conference play, Coach Dave Hendrix will be looking to a seasoned bunch of seniors and a handful of underclassmen. In fact, the Mohawks were affected very little by graduation and will be returning 10 starters on either side of the football...

Mohawks complete football schedule
Posted Thursday, July 15, at 3:47 PM

The Piggott Mohawks will travel to Salem for their third contest of the 2010 high school football season for a non-conference game with the Greyhounds. The third week had been an open date for the Tribe, with only Pine Bluff Dollarway showing any interest. (Yikes!) But, according to assistant coach Michael Harrell, the Salem game has been secured to allow the Mohawks a full 10 game schedule...

Lakers win slugfest
Posted Friday, June 18, at 8:46 AM

Yesterday I bemoaned the fact that I felt the NBA final that evening would be a Laker blowout, especially with the injury to Boston center Kendrick Perkins. Luckily, I was wrong and the final turned out to be an old fashioned slugfest with Los Angeles squeaking by--mainly thanks to a ton of missed shots by the Celtics...

An emotional week in sports
Posted Thursday, June 10, at 8:48 AM

It was an emotional week for sports fans all over the country, and we are once again reminded that sport in general has such a far reaching effect on our lives. The saga of Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers, his near-perfect game and the reaction to it was an amazing story. On its heels sports lost one of its true immortals with the passing of basketball coach John Wooden, the "Wizard of Westwood."...

We're only human
Posted Thursday, June 3, at 3:15 PM

You gotta feel bad for MLB umpire Jim Joyce for the flak he's taking today. By now everyone has heard of the infamous blown call at first base that ruined a perfect game for the Detroit Tigers. Afterward Joyce owned up, and in very blunt terms took responsibility for the call like a man. He blew it, and admitted it, and it's over...

Congrats to the Mohawk baseball team
Posted Wednesday, May 19, at 1:18 AM

Although they fell in the first round of the state tournament at Harrison Monday, the Piggott Mohawks have had a successful baseball season and should be commended. The drive through the Region 3 tournament at Tuckerman was a great time, and will go down in the history of the program as one of its finest moments...

Young Mohawks on a roll
Posted Wednesday, May 12, at 11:16 AM

The Piggott Mohawks may be a young team, compared to some of the competition that they've taken on recently--but don't call them inexperienced. The lone senior on the squad is third baseman Trent Edwards, while the bulk of the roster is comprised of a talented group of underclassmen--many of which have been playing together for years...

Mohawk regional semi a nailbiter
Posted Sunday, May 9, at 9:24 AM

If you paid your five bucks to attend Saturday's Region 3 baseball tournament at Tuckerman you got more than your money's worth. In fact, either semi was well worth the price of a single admission. In the early game the Piggott Mohawks continued to ride their late season surge to a 3-2 win over the host Tuckerman Bulldogs, marking the second number one seed they had faced--and knocked off...

Tigers never knew what hit them
Posted Friday, May 7, at 8:47 PM

The Valley Springs Tigers never knew what hit them, as they took on the Piggot Mohawks in their first round regional game at Tuckerman. The Tribe pounced on the Tigers by way of a Colby Lovelace homerun in the first, and that proved to be enough, as they cruised 17-1...
