Where were you when the king died?
Posted Monday, August 16, at 8:23 AM
It's Monday, Aug. 16, which as many will remember is the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. Others may remember it as the date that Babe Ruth died in 1948. Even lesser known is the fact that it is the birthday of my younger brother, Tom, who was born on this date in 1959. Happy birthday bro.

In my recent story about the plane crash of 1970 I noted that most people remember exactly where they were when landmark occasions occured. As for this date in 1977, it's as clear as glass.

I worked second shift at the Hobart Brothers factory in Troy, Ohio that made Hobart welders and ground power systems. I was a machinist and ran a turret lathe on the 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. shift at the main plant.

It was also the week of the Miami County Fair in Troy, and I had volunteered my time working in a concession stand for a CB club that I belonged to at the time.

I had rode my motorcycle to the fairgrounds to work my shift, prior to going to my regular job, and was told that Elvis had died.

As a son of the Mid-South Elvis was a big part of my childhood, although I remembered him most from his later work. But to hear that he was gone was huge, to a 20 year old (as I was at the time) it was like being told that your youth is now over and it's time to start growing old.

I've always had a great appreciation for the talents of Elvis, and hate that he became a ghost of his former self in his latter years. But, I'll always remember the young Elvis--surfing, skydiving, driving race cars and chasing pretty girls. My kind of role model.

Politicos make picnic interesting
Posted Friday, July 9, at 4:14 PM

Just some short musings on the political scene at the annual Piggott Fourth of July Picnic. The turnout was good from both sides of the aisle, and the speeches were pretty much what was to be expected. Nothing earth shattering, and none of the challengers offered anything new. But some have the mentality that anyone else is better than some of the ones we have...

Everybody has to come from somewhere
Posted Wednesday, June 30, at 5:01 PM

Its picnic week in Piggott, a time when the city swells to near twice its normal size and out-of-state license plates are the norm. For years the annual Fourth of July Picnic has served to bring hundreds of former residents back to town for reunions, to visit with family and friends and to draw from their history. Face it, everybody comes from somewhere -- and there are a lot worse places that you could be from than Piggott...

Hospital tax issue draws big crowd
Posted Thursday, March 11, at 12:21 PM

The turnout for Monday night's public hearing on the proposed sales tax issue for Piggott Community Hospital was excellent! Well over 200 people turned out for the event, which tells you just how important the hospital is to our town and its people...

Hospital sales tax issue should be a no-brainer
Posted Wednesday, February 24, at 12:31 PM

I'll admit that I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I think that I'm smart enough to know a good deal when I see one. And, although I've been wrong before, I don't see how anyone can find grounds to oppose the proposed one-cent local sales tax to benefit Piggott Community Hospital...

Don't forget our local treasures
Posted Thursday, January 21, at 11:43 AM

Piggott has a number of treasures, some that people are well aware of and many others that go unnoticed. I must admit that I am as guilty as anyone that lives around here, or comes back to visit on a regular basis, for not fully appreciating what we have...

Wishes for a Happy New Year
Posted Wednesday, December 30, at 10:45 AM

I don't think anyone is going to call 2009 a red-letter year. Any year that will be remembered for costing billions of dollars, thanks to the ice storm and wet conditions for regional farmers, won't be remembered with fondness. It's the same way many folks remember years of drought and unusually hot weather...

Are they still handing out cash?
Posted Thursday, September 17, at 8:35 AM

The federal stimulus gravy train has caused a bit of a feeding-frenzy across the United States. The government, in an attempt to shore up the economy and get more cash into the loop, has been printing the stuff night and day and pumping it into various parts of the country. ...

Most important part of a 'Town Hall' meeting
Posted Thursday, December 18, at 12:49 PM

It's fairly simple that a "Town Hall" style meeting, as is planned for Dec. 30 in Piggott, can't be held without the "town". The meeting, which is set for 7 p.m. at The Piggott Diner, has been planned to seek input from the public on just where we need to focus our economic development efforts. It's imperative that everyone is represented as our city leaders choose what path to take for the future, and questions are currently being sought...

Are you big enough to be bailed-out?
Posted Thursday, September 25, at 9:10 AM

Earlier this year I wrote an editorial about the economic stimulus checks that were used to try to jump-start a stale economy. I was against the idea at the time, and still find it a ridiculous effort, due to the fact that we have to borrow the money and then pay interest on it later. ...

Back to school time
Posted Friday, August 15, at 9:48 AM

It's back to school time for students across the region, and here in Piggott. Local students will resume classes on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at both campuses. In light of that, a recent report has some good news for local patrons. You may have seen the reports on school rankings, which chose Valley View as the number one district in the state of Arkansas. Well, did you wonder how the Piggott schools faired?...

Best foot forward
Posted Thursday, July 10, at 10:01 AM

Piggott did a good job of hosting KAIT's Good Neighbor Tour this past Tuesday evening. A good crowd turned out at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum for the live broadcasts at 5:00 and 6 p.m., and despite an early shower the weather was tolerable. All of the KAIT folks that I spoke with were impressed by what our town had to offer, and most promised to come back when they had more time...

Happy Fourth of July
Posted Thursday, July 3, at 9:45 AM

As we observe Independence Day 2008 I'd like for everyone to take a moment to remember those who have kept our country free. Our founding fathers fought to offer us a chance to live and worship freely, and countless men and women have sacrificed their lives since to keep it that way...

Economic development key to strong future
Posted Thursday, June 12, at 9:14 AM

The move by the Piggott City Council recently to fund the hiring of an economic development director was bold, and neccessary. Last December local voters rejected a proposed sales tax issue that would have funded the hiring of such a person, now the city fathers have stepped-up to help insure a bright future for our town...
